Requiem

Player Handout 4

The letter below is written in French.

My friends,

I have analyzed the violin as requested.

It is a gruesome piece of art. It appears to have been constructed from the remains of a young child. I cannot specifically say why, but for some reason I believe the child may be from Spain. I perceived an image of her – beautiful golden hair and a fair complexion, but an innocent face twisted into evil by magic.

As an expert in the field of music, and specifically musical enchantments, I must say I’ve never encountered anything this malevolent. The device seems to have some sort of ability to absorb life energy. We as listeners to a maestro playing a wonderful song give a gift of ourselves to the player quite freely. This contraption seems to have the ability to draw that gift out of us and harvest it. I believe this energy could be stored in some manner, perhaps in the crystalline piece that seems to be missing at the neck of the instrument.

Prolonged exposure to the music can fatigue one as if they went for a quick jaunt around the block. The effect upon the unhealthy could be lethal. That appears to be what happened at some point with this instrument, for I sense a presence of a man, a rather odious man, though by no means damaged. I believe his spirit no longer troubles this world, though I cannot say whether it departed for Purgatory or
Hell.

Though I grieve for the small child whose life ended to create this instrument of evil, I do believe it is safe to destroy the remaining pieces of this instrument. Indeed, perhaps as a way to honor the child, I recommend it as a final requiem.

Yours truly,
M. Maurice Beauchere
