Key passages from the Journal (written
in French):
January 21st, 1893 – I met a great woman today. I have not turned my attention to another woman in quite some time. Why is this one so special? I am to meet her tomorrow for dinner. I cannot say why, but I know I shall go through with it. Elmea, forgive me!
February 2nd, 1893 – The woman has taught me so much. I used to believe I was a skilled craftsman, but this woman can work magic! Real magic! She has taught me how to create items beyond my belief. She has asked me to call her Princess. There is something regal about her, something special. We’re working on something now, something special for the 1893 World’s Fair. I had planned a different item for the exhibit, but she has convinced me otherwise.
February 15th, 1893 – I introduced Corinne to the Princess today, as instructed. She was quite pleased with my daughter. She said she will carry on my work quite nicely.
February 28th, 1893 – The Princess has asked me to do something today. I suspect today will be my last day on this great Earth. But I must do it, for my Princess, for my Queen. Elmea, take care of the children for me. And forgive me.
