Military News:
There are still reports regarding Kitchener’s victory in the Sudan against the Madist (Battle of Omduram Sept 1st) is seen as the revenge for the death of General Gordon (Khartoum 1885). However, Khalifa Abdullah the successor of El Mahdi who had led the revolt against Egyptian control of the Sudan is still at large and the hunt for him will continue.
Fashoda (fusho`du) Incident
The French having desired a overland route from the Red
Sea to the Atlantic Ocean sent troops from its Brazziville, despite British warning. (The
British want to establish a contiguous strip of territory from Cape town to Cairo) . The
French having fought off a contingent of the Madist in July were awaiting reinforcements
in Fashoda in southern Sudan. Hearing of this Kitchener continued south after the Battle
of Omduram and claimed (on Sept 19th) that same town for Egypt despite the French
forces presence. The Diplomats of both governments are engaged in heated
discussions. It is not know yet if war can be averted.
The two year campaign is a testament to the better training and equipment of the
combined Anglo-Egyptian army which was frequently outnumbered.
Spanish American War update:
Peace protocol having been signed in August, diplomats are negotiating exactly how much and what properties Spain will lose. There is some speculation in British papers, but otherwise the “war” is considered over and “old News”
Tourists Injured in rockslide
A group of four tourists were injured as they hiked in the area known as the Valley of the Kings. It is believed the group has spent the better part of the day touring the temples in Deir el-Bahari and may have attempted to climb the one of the walls of the wadi to view the sunset. Though their injuries are severe they are expected to recover. None have any direct recollection of the accident and this is still be investigated.
New Kingdom Tomb discovered
Victor Loret, the director of antiquities has announced that he has discovered another tomb in the Valley of the Kings. Preliminary findings indicate the tomb is from the period known as New Kingdom and possibly is the tomb of Amenheptep II.
