April 1st, 1897
Due to the urgings of a woman I met, she has encouraged me to let my wife rest during her pregnancy.
This woman, Therese, is a capable chemist and seems particularly interested in thermite reactions.
Though I was reluctant to study such, she persuaded me otherwise.
April 15th, 1897
Marie is become increasingly frustrated with the time I spend away from her. She understands science
required dedicate, but I must admit I also feel guilty about being gone from her for so long. Therese
assures me it is nothing to worry about, and I don’t want to disobey Therese. She is a remarkable
woman, able to quickly grasp scientific concepts that would take most people years to understand. It’s
almost as if she is reading my mind.
April 20th, 1897
I’m not sure why Therese insists we keep these new people around. However, they are helpful at moving
things around the laboratory, and with all the aluminum powder we have now, their help is appreciated.
Therese asked me if a hot air balloon would be able to carry all the aluminum powder we had. I told her“not without magic”, with a bit of a chuckle. She looked at me funny, and said “I guess that’s how I will do
it then”.
April 22nd, 1897
I’ve discovered that for some reason, these men, who Therese calls our “Shadow Men Allies”, are storing
a great deal of dynamite on the premises. I asked Therese, who keeps insisting I call her “Princess”, why
we are working with them. She said it’s not for me to worry about, but I worry still, at least privately.
April 23rd, 1897
These Shadow Men seem to have some sort of ill agenda. They have talked about various points in town
where explosives could be taken, and they keep asking me how many sticks of dynamite would be
required to destroy such a building. I have helped them build some of these devices even. I hope they
don’t follow through on their plans.
April 24th, 1897
The Princess almost caught me journaling today. I try to keep my notes private, as a record, but I don’t
think she would like the idea. We’re going to visit a journalist friend of mine soon, since the Princess
wants to send a note to her old friends. I also cannot understand why the
